People who have COPD are more likely to get lung infections such as pneumonia or acute bronchitis. Damage to the airways makes it harder for the lungs to clear out mucus and germs that lead to lung infections. Colds, flu, pneumonia, and bronchitis can cause flare-ups of COPD symptoms. A lung infection can cause serious health problems for someone with COPD.

Symptoms of a lung infection can include:

  • Breathing difficulties such as wheezing and increased shortness of breath

  • Sharp pain when coughing or breathing deeply

  • Coughing up increasing amounts of mucus

  • Changes in the color or thickness of mucus

  • Tightness or burning in the chest

  • Sore throat or pain when swallowing

  • Fever or chills

It is very important to contact your doctor if you feel any of these symptoms, even if you do not otherwise feel ill. You may not have all of the symptoms. Treating lung infections right away can prevent symptoms from getting worse. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Ask if you should get the pneumonia vaccine. Talk to your doctor about making an action plan for when you feel symptoms of a lung infection.
