Everyone wants to avoid the flu, but people with heart disease have to be especially careful. If you have heart problems, you have a higher risk for complications from the flu. It’s important to know the symptoms of the flu, which include:

  • High fever (100°F or higher) or feeling feverish (not everyone with flu runs a fever)
  • Body aches, headaches, or pains in the joints and muscles
  • Cough or sore throat
  • Chills, nausea, or vomiting
  • Fatigue or a feeling of weakness

Experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that anyone with heart disease get a flu vaccine. You can get the shot from your doctor, or you can visit an urgent care clinic. Flu vaccines are widely available at this time of year, including at clinics in pharmacies and retail stores.

Protect yourself further by taking preventive steps, such as washing your hands often with soap and warm water. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially those high in immunity-boosting vitamin C.

If you think you are coming down with the flu, talk to your doctor right away. Ask about medications that might be right for you. Not all over-the-counter medications are good for people with heart conditions.

FLU COMPLICATIONS
People who have heart disease are also at risk for developing complications like pneumonia during flu season. Ask your doctor what precautions you can take to avoid pneumonia.
